Today, the San Francisco Bay Area has the highest incident rate of breast cancer in the entire United States.  Based on 2008 statistics, it is estimated that this year alone, some 1.4 million people in the United States will be diagnosed with some type of cancer.   Furthermore, it is estimated that more than 550,000 people will die from the disease during 2009.  Incredibly, according to the National Cancer Institute, one in every two people born today will at some point during their lifetime develop some form of cancer.  This should be considered a national health risk in need of intensive federal funding.  We consider it to be so and we support as much federal funding as is needed for the proper research and development of preventive medicines, treatment, and cures of cancer.
